1. The Champawat Tiger

In the early 1900s, a Bengal tigress known as the Champawat Tiger terrorized the Kumaon region of India and Nepal. This fearsome feline was responsible for an estimated 436 human deaths before being finally hunted down and killed by Jim Corbett in 1907.

2. The Gustave Crocodile

Gustave is a large male Nile crocodile from Burundi, who is believed to have killed over 300 people along the banks of the Ruzizi River and the northern shores of Lake Tanganyika. He is still at large and has become a local legend.

3. The Tsavo Man-Eaters

In 1898, two male lions terrorized the workers constructing the Kenya-Uganda Railway in Tsavo, Kenya. These lions, known as the Tsavo Man-Eaters, killed and ate an estimated 135 people before being shot and killed by British engineer John Henry Patterson.

In July 1916, a series of shark attacks along the coast of New Jersey killed four people and left one injured. These attacks inspired the famous novel “Jaws” by Peter Benchley and the subsequent movie adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg.

5. The Sankebetsu Brown Bear Incident

In December 1915, a large brown bear attacked several homes in the Sankebetsu area of Hokkaido, Japan. The bear killed seven people and injured three others before being shot and killed by a hunter.

Between 1918 and 1926, a male leopard terrorized the people of Rudraprayag, India, killing an estimated 125 people. The leopard was eventually shot and killed by Jim Corbett, the same hunter who took down the Champawat Tiger.

In 1944-1954, a pack of wolves attacked and killed 22 children in the Kirov Oblast region of Russia. These attacks were unusual because wolves rarely target humans, and the high number of fatalities was attributed to the desperation caused by World War II.

In the 1980s and 1990s, an elephant named Osama terrorized the villages surrounding the Aberdare Forest in Kenya. Osama was responsible for at least 27 human deaths before being hunted down and killed in 1996.
